To relieve chronic air traffic congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport and stimulate economic growth in western Nepal, major upgrade projects transformed the site. It was formally inaugurated as an international airport on May 16, 2022 (coinciding with Buddha Jayanti), making it a vital strategic hub. Unlike the complex terrain surrounding the capital, GBIA features wide-body-capable infrastructure situated in the Terai plains, offering an alternative international gateway and driving regional tourism, trade, and accessibility for southwestern Nepal. </p>
